23/06/2010 – Refugee and Migrant Justice emergency appeal fails

Administrators are still winding up the Refugee and Migrant Justice charity despite a campaign which raised more than £76,000 in 24 hours. The sum was deemed not large enough to rescue it.

The public pledged £76,525 to support RMJ, which went into administration earlier this month. Support was also offered by charitable trusts and organisations.

According to RMJ a backlog of payments totalling £1.8m from the Legal Services Commission is the reason for the closure. However the government maintains that other organisations are coping with the new payments system and RMJ should have done the same.

Donations will be returned and those who pledged money to RMJ are being informed.
