25/05/2010 – Directory of Social Change plans ‘safe charity register’

The introduction of a register for charities deemed safe for investment is planned by the Directory of Social Change, enabling potential lenders and grant makers to browse before making decisions. Basic information about charities will be provided by the proposed Supportability Register for bodies considering making loans or grants and individuals looking to donate.

The register will be part of the GuideStar UK website, which was acquired by the DSC from GuideStar International in March.

Charities will be able to opt in to the register, which would require them comply with the Statement of Recommended Practice demonstrate they have a bank account, and publish an accurate and meaningful annual report. Charities might also be required to report on specific appeals they have run to demonstrate they offer meaningful work to volunteers.
