LASA chairs launch of London Advice Forum report

On November 28th the London Advice Forum launched its report “Supporting advice in London: a review of infrastructure needs”. The report was funded by the London Regional Consortium of Change Up and the launch was supported by the Mayor’s Office and the GLA.

Andy Gregg the Chief Executive of Lasa Chaired the event which heard from Neale Coleman (Senior Policy Advisor to the Mayor of London) on the vital importance that the Mayor gives to independent advice provision in the capital and his wider and continuing commitment to the voluntary sector in London. Alison Lamb (of ADP consultancy) detailed the main conclusions of the report and Michael Murray of Advice UK London ran through the actions that the London Advice Forum was taking in response to the report and to the rapidly changing environment for advice in London.

The Government’s response to the consultation on the Carter report and the future for London Council’s funding for advice services were discussed. Serious concerns were raised about the threatened imposition of fixed fees for legal advice that take no account of the special circumstances and higher costs of advice provision in London.

The launch was attended by over 100 guests who represented local and central governments, funding agencies and the advice sector itself. The report focused on four areas which need attention, and made a series of suggestions on each as to the way forward. These were:

  • Making the case for advice
  • Workforce development
  • Planning and developing services to adapt to change
  • Increasing organizational infrastructure e.g. ICT
